A Nightime Lantern Parade

Last weekend we attended a fun and quite unique event with the kids we would love to share with you. We visited Jamaica Plain, a neighborhood in Boston, for their 32nd Annual Jamaica Pond Lantern Parade
You create a lantern and at sunset walk around the pond.... better yet this is what the description on the website says:
The ritual of the Jamaica Pond Lantern Parade began in 1984 when people gathered to make a journey with their candle-lit lanterns around Jamaica Pond. Each year approximately 4,000 people arrive at Jamaica Pond on each of two evenings at sunset with their lanterns; many children arriving in full Halloween costume as well. The parade proceeds around the pond, bringing a trail of bouncing lights into the darkness that can be seen from all directions. This beautiful autumn evening ceremony has become an annual tradition in our community. The Lantern Parade has its cultural roots in Dutch tradition. It reflects our dedication to building community by exploring old and creating new cultural traditions.
Here are the lanterns we created with the kids for the event. Making these were so fun and easy. I love that it is a creative project to do with the kids but I can also decorate my house with them.
You'll need a plastic 2 liter bottle, cut the top off and glue color tissue paper around the outside. We used Mod Podge to glue down the tissue. Punch two holes, attach a string and insert a few battery operated tea light candle inside and that's it. Let your creativity run wild when it comes to using the tissue paper. We had loads of fun cutting and gluing!
They look so magical at night.
This was another design we did last minute. The picture is showing the front and back of the lantern.
It was a fun time and we can see ourselves making more lanterns for other occasions to hang in the studio windows.  Hope you all have a Glowing Autumn Season!

Our First Reading Fall Street Faire

Hello Friends! Swirly participated in our first Fall Street Faire in our hometown a few weeks ago.

We visit the event every year with the kids and always left saying "Gee, next year we should get a booth and give it a try". Well, things happen and we always seem forget to register. :-(

This year, however, we remembered! And we're glad we did. The weather was sunny and pleasant, which brought in the crowds. The event organizer estimated approx 10,000 people visited this one day event, choc full of local businesses. Having two kids in the school system here, we were visited by many of our school friends, parents, teachers and neighbors. It was funny that they were all kind of surprised and a little puzzled to actually see what we make and do for a living. I guess we aren't the heaviest self promoters of what we do when socializing with our community.

Crowds of people roam the streets visiting and supporting the community.
Our booth is all set up and ready. (It was quite windy that day, so our table cloths were blowing)
Our two Swirly Helpers manning the booth.
A framed process helps explain what polymer clay is and how we make our Swirlies.

All and all it was a fun day. Having our kids join us for a large part of the day helping pass out business cards was great. And when the event was over and the car was packed up it was especially nice to know we were only a 5 minute car ride home!

Where is our Halloween update?

Next week is the start of Autumn. The kids have returned to school, the days are getting cooler and we are busy gearing up for the upcoming Holiday season.

However, we are usually gearing up and preparing for our BIG Swirly Halloween launch right about now...BUT after much debate (well, as much as two people can have:) we decided we weren't going to do a large Halloween/Autumn collection launch this year. Boo!Hiss! I know! Instead we are focusing more on our very popular Christmas collection.

We didn't want to totally pass by one of our favorite Holiday seasons without some acknowledgment, so to celebrate, we have updated our Autumn & Halloween ornament section in our shop with some of our favorite Swirly Designs. And if you are on our mailing list you will have an opportunity to order a special Halloween and/or Autumn Swirly ornament set coming shortly. So be on the look out for that.

Hope you are enjoying the season! Happy Autumn!

Are you on Instagram? We would love for you to follow us. We post almost daily on what we are up to in the studio, interesting craft finds and sometimes a glimpse into our family life.
