For the birds!

We survived! What you ask, did we survive? Turning our clocks back!! I don't know about you, but this pesky little thing we do in fall is quite literally "for the birds"! We have so many clocks to make sure we turn back, it can drive us bonkers. BUT we did it and now we are settling into the days getting darker MUCH earlier. Winter is right around the corner.

And with the cold weather upon us we thought it would be a good idea to make a few bird feeders to hang in our yard to help our little birdie friends during the colder months.

We wanted to do something inexpensive and easy that our 6 year old would enjoy helping with.

The only supplies we used were a liter seltzer bottle, wooden spoons, birdseed and some twine.




We got a 4lb bag of birdseed for $1.32.



We started out by having our son mark where the holes go for the spoons. Basically the spoons act as perches for the birds and the seeds spill out onto the flat part of the spoon. We cut out the holes with a sharp pair of scissors. The spoons were cheap too...a pack of 4 for $1!



Once the spoons were put in the bottle it was time to fill 'er up! The 6 year old thought this was the best part because he got to use a scoop and a funnel! Be sure to use a pan with a lip to catch any spills!

The last step before hanging is to insert an eye screw to the cap of the bottle and then you are ready to add your twine to hang.



Now off to go find places to hang them! We made two, so we put one in the back yard and one in the front. We'll see which place draws more of a "crowd".

And lo and behold, our first feathered friends! Here is a little chickadee munching on the seeds and the photo below shows a bluejay checking out the seeds that have fallen from the feeder. He's in the lower right of the picture.



So for a little over $3 we think that this is a great project for little ones to do. It teaches them about wildlife and responsibility. We told him that he has to make sure to check the feeders often because the birds will come to rely on them and not to let them get empty. We also are hoping the squirrels don't get to the seed before the birds do!

A Snowy Day and New Years Greetings

We had a nice little BLIZZARD here in New England earlier this week. The snow started here on Sunday and didn't stop until Monday night. It was no fun for us who had to shovel this wet heavy snow, but for our little ones it was heaven. Our 5 year old loved the snow and we couldn't get him inside until he started to turn blue, but our little one wanted no part of it. Being this was her first major snow storm we thought if she wasn't going to go out we decided to bring the snow in for her.

Frogs and Butterflies

The rain here in New England gave us the idea to visit the Museum of Science today with the kiddos. It was a fun time for sure. Since Gryffin is learning all about insects this month in pre-school we thought it was a good opportunity to visit the Butterfly Garden at the Museum. He really enjoyed that and desperately wanted a butterfly to land on him (none did). We also went to the Frogs exhibit. We all had fun searching for the frogs in each habitat.

We got some really nice close up shots of the frogs and butterflies that we thought we'd share.

Spring flowers

Hello everyone!
It's been awhile since we've been able to post. If you saw our last post you'll know why. (Thanks again to all who sent the congrats emails and warm wishes to our new baby Chloe) She and Lianne are doing great and hopefully soon we will get back on a schedule here at the studio.

In the meantime here are some pictures of spring flowers we took over the weekend.

Also, we noticed on our calendar here at the studio that Friday April 24th was our 1 year anniversary for this blog. We planned on doing a giveaway, but since we won't have a new collection coming out until fall, we thought we'd wait and do it then.

Spring is in the air...NOT so fast

You've gotta love Mother Nature especially if you live in New England area. This weekend we felt like spring was approaching. We had beautiful spring-like weather in the 50 - 60°s and we were finally able to go without jackets. We went for a walk, played catch with the little one and we were very close to even going to the zoo (but didn't think they would be open since it still is technically winter here )
Realizing that when you get weather like this in March in NE you best make the most of it because it could all change like that......well actually like this....


We awoke Monday morning to this... 30° and snow.
Mother Nature your such a tease!

One thing for sure though, whether it's beautiful spring weather or miserable winter weather our son always seem to make the best of the situation.
